Covid-19 and the revival of Australian Manufacturing

Last month, the ABC shared an article entitled “Australian manufacturing has been in terminal decline but coronavirus might revive it” and we couldn’t agree more.

In the late 1980s manufacturing was the biggest employer in Australia, with 16.5 percent of the workforce. Now, Australia only produces two-thirds of the number of manufactured goods it consumes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that in times of emergency, Australia cannot rely on goods being sourced and manufactured offshore. The Australia Health Research & Development Group Pty Ltd has proven a strong ability to produce essential products during times of emergency, with over 2 millions of units of hand sanitiser being made in a mere 3 months. Since the global outbreak, our Acacia Ridge factory has intensified capabilities to produce up to 60,000 units of sanitiser a day and have opened our doors to other brands and businesses looking for private label sanitising products.

The Hon Karen Andrews MP – Minister for Industry, Science and Technology says “ Purchasing an Australian made product or service or supporting an Australian owned business isn’t just good for those businesses and their workers; it creates an increased demand for everyone along the supply chain, from local courier drivers to packaging suppliers to manufacturers of various components and primary producers.

All Australians benefit from consumers buying Australian made products.

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown new light on the importance of local manufacturing and the general public is responding. I have been heartened to see many Australians backing my calls to support our own manufacturers and contacting me wanting to know how they can best help and support local Aussie businesses.

As we emerge from the economic hit many businesses and the nation have taken in this crisis and look towards recovery, it is an opportune time to help Australians in their preference to buy Australian.”

We feel a positive push toward local manufacturing on the horizon, with many Australians actively seeking out locally made products. Ben Lazzaro, the CEO of Australian Made Campaign Limited, said that their website has increased 130 percent on normal, attracting more than 250,000 visitors a month.

A promising shift in consumer preferences should entice business owners to seek out an Australian Made alternative and or manufacturing partner. This business strategy will not only improve supply chain and support the local economy but also position your brand as high quality. Research suggests that marketing your products with the Australian Made logo automatically gains confidence and preference for Australian consumers.
